          The Ugly Duckling

(Present Simple Tense – prítomný jednoduchý čas)

It is spring. In a small village, there is a farm where live lots of animals. There is a pig, a hen, a rooster and a duck. The duck has a nest and there are five eggs in it. One day the eggs crack open and five little ducklings come out. One of them is much bigger than his brothers and sisters. The animals think he is ugly and they call him the Ugly Duckling.

It is summer. Day after day ducklings grow, but the Ugly Duckling grows bigger and bigger. He doesn´t look like his brothers and sisters but his mother loves him very much. Every day the animals play on a farm. They don´t want to play with the Ugly Duckling. He is very sad and lonely. One day he decides to leave the farm and go into the world.

There is a lake near the farm. The Ugly Duckling wants to swim in it. He can see three beautiful white birds flying across the sky. They are going south for the winter. He wants to fly with them.

It is autumn. The days are shorter and it is colder and colder. The Ugly Duckling looks for food. He goes to a little house near the lake. There is an old woman. She looks at the Ugly Duckling and says, „I don´t want you here. You are not a hen and you can´t give me any eggs. Go away!“

Winter comes and it is very cold. One day a farmer finds the Ugly Duckling in his garden. He is cold and hungry. The man takes him home. The farmer´s children play with the Ugly Duckling in the living room. He feels warm and safe. Everybody here thinks he is really pretty.

Spring comes soon. There are green leaves on the trees and it is warmer and warmer. One sunny day the children take the Ugly Duckling to the lake. There are two beautiful white swans swimming in it. The Ugly Duckling looks at them. He can see they look exatcly like him. Now he knows he is a swan too. He is no longer the Ugly Duckling.

Suddenly comes a wolf. „Where are you going to, little girl?“ he asks. „To my Granny´s house,“ says the girl. „Don´t hurry. Pick some flowers for your Granny“, he says and runs to Granny´s house.

He looks through the window and sees the old woman sitting in her chair and having a nap. The wolf opens the door without knocking and get into the house. The wolf eats poor Granny. He puts on her clothes and lies down into her bed.

I           n a few minutes Little Red Riding Hood comes to Granny´s house and opens the bedroom door. „It is strange... What big eyes and ears and teeth Granny has... is it really her?“ she thinks. Suddenly the wolf jumps out of bed and eats the girl.

Now the wolf is full and he falls asleep. A hunter goes around Granny´s house and hears some loud snoring. He opens the door and sees the wolf asleep in bed. He cuts his fat belly and out jump Granny and her granddaughter. „Thank you for saving us,“ they say to the hunter.

Now the bad wolf is gone. Granny, the hunter and Little Red Riding Hood are in the garden, sitting and having some cake and tea. They are all very happy.

„All is well that ends well“ says the hunter.
